Women Leading Change

When you invest in a woman, you invest in lasting social change. When women are empowered to lead, they effect change within the family structure, within organizations, and within their communities. The Women Leading Change program recognizes this dynamic and leverages it to maximize impact. The comprehensive five-month curriculum for high-potential, mid-career women in East Africa unlocks individual leadership skills and increases women’s confidence.

Our unique approach challenges participants to audaciously define the change they want to lead in the world, and this begins from within.  If women are provided opportunities to deeply connect to themselves and their purpose, this will strengthen their leadership.

60% of Women Leading Change graduates report improved relationships at work and in their families, 40% increased community civic participation, 27% serve on boards, many graduates report promotions, raises, and new business ventures, and 60% of graduates actively mentor aspiring women leaders.

Women Leading Change Participants Receive Access To:

  • Classroom training: In August experienced trainers will facilitate four days of classroom learning.
  • Coaching: Participants will join four months of customized, one-on-one coaching sessions from September to December. Women Leading Change trained coaches from East Africa will support participants in achieving their personal leadership goals.
  • Alumni Support Group: Participants will be connected in Alumni groups to support one another beyond graduation. The WhatsApp groups offer a safe space for discussions and to celebrate milestones.
  • Future Leaders: Sasamani calls upon Women Leading Change graduates to provide meaningful internship opportunities and direct mentoring for Sasamani Sponsored Students through the Future Leaders Program.

Coaching is a process of self-discovery and empowerment. Through monthly 60-min one-on-one sessions, your coach will support you in thinking deeply about what you want more of and the actions you can take to achieve those outcomes. Coaching is very different from classroom instruction. Coaches don’t come with answers; they come with questions and hold sacred space where you can find your own answers. We consistently receive feedback that the coaching portion of the program results in profound transformation and gives participants a formal way to apply what they learn in the classroom to their unique lives.

Yes. Applicants may apply for a needs-based scholarship to cover the participant fee and/or to cover travel, room, and/or board expenses. Applications are assessed on an individual level. As part of the program's registration process, you can submit a letter with your motivation (max. 250 words), the total scholarship amount you apply for, and a breakdown of these anticipated costs. Scholarship funds are limited, so we ask that you not apply unless you truly would not be able to attend without financial support.

You will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the coaching.  A certificate will be provided and signed by Makerere University Business School.

Applications for early bird pricing discount (TZS 520,000) are due June 1st. Regular applications are due June 12th (TZS 650,000).

If you are selected to attend the program, you will receive a letter by June 15th detailing the expectations, cost, and logistical details. You can use this letter to communicate with your employer and gain approval for participation.

Program participants are East African mid-career women leaders from entrepreneurial, business, banking, government, non-profit and other sectors who aspire to positions of increasing responsibility and influence.

Yes, the instruction and course materials will be in English. If you are paired with a coach who speaks your native language, you can use that for coaching calls.

We acknowledge that both men and women are necessary to empower and create more opportunities for women to lead change. At this time, our program supports women to build their internal beliefs; therefore, our specific program is only open for women. We are open to building future programs that include men, and we welcome your ideas in this regard.

No. Women Leading Change is open to any midcareer woman living in and culturally connected to any East African country, including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The application will be available online at www.thesasamanifoundation.org on May 12th. You can access the application HERE.
